(sent to Arlyn Bernhardt by John Olsen, Madison, Wisconsin)

The Purdy's (Mr and Mrs Daniel Crane Purdy and family) came to Wisconsin in 1861 from New York State. Mr. Purdy had operated a ship carrying freight on the Great Lakes before coming to Wisconsin. Tales told by various members of the family tell that Mrs. Daniel Purdy's parents had owned the land which the Purdy's settled on in Monroe county, but others tell that Mrs. Purdy's father had received it in a land grant after the Revolutionary War. At any rate, the entire family came here and settled on the farm later known as the Hart place. This was later taken over as part of Camp McCoy, as were most of the other farms in that valley.

Very little is known about Daniel Crane Purdy's parents. His children all lived in Monroe County until their deaths. Some say the three Purdy brothers--Solomon Genau, Daniel Crane and Augustus F.--went to Milwaukee together from New York, then separated and never got in touch again.
