Obituary Notes: "John D. Rezin Sr. of rural Tomah died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at Mayo Franciscan Skemp Hospital in La Crosse. He was 91 years old.
John was born Sept. 19, 1920, to Robert and Edith Herms Rezin in Rudolph, where the family farmed. When John was a young man, the family moved to Tomah, where they owned and operated a cranberry marsh.
John married Jean Edith Buschbom in 1940, and they became owners of North Tomah Cranberry Marsh. John and Jean had three children: John L. (Joy), James R. (Betty) and Fredrick C. (Brenda) Rezin and raised his children and many cranberry crops on the marsh.
John loved the outdoor work and the challenge of developing the marsh and growing a crop. He hunted as a sport and to feed his family. In the early years he worked at Fort McCoy and trapped to supplement the family income. He taught his children the love of the outdoors, hunting and fishing, the satisfaction of hard work and what it means to be a faithful Christian husband and father.
His wife Jean died in 1975 at the age of 52, and he missed her greatly.
John later married Mary (Leis) Rezin and retired from the marsh in 1985.
He remained actively interested in the marsh and all marsh activities until the day he died and helped in any way he could. John never missed being present every day of harvest over the many years he was alive and was seen daily in his vehicle with a faithful German shepherd dog by his side.
John truly loved and cared for every member of his family and extended family. He was a kind and gracious man, known for his smile and genuine interest in people.
John was a faithful Christian and follower of Jesus Christ. He was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Tomah and understood the Christian need to give and receive support from a church family. He looked forward to attending church and any church activities and was in “his pew” every Sunday that he could be there.
John supported St. Mary’s Episcopal Church as senior warden for many years and helped with the move, renovations of the church and any inside and outside work that needed to be done.
John also was interested in his community and served many years on the Oak Grove Cemetery Board and as chairman of the town of LaGrange until he retired from that position in 1993.
John was a Third-Degree Mason and a member of the Tomah Masonic lodge. He is a past master and also was a member of the Tomah Mecca Shrine.
John was preceded in death by his wife Jean; his parents, Robert and Edith; and an infant brother, Charles. He now is in heaven with his wife Jean; his brother, Robert and wife Margaret; his brother, Clarence and wife Vivian; and his sister, Alice and husband Milton.
He is survived by his wife Mary, who was privileged to have John as a husband for 35 years and to have shared the affection shown his many German shepherds, the latest being Sophia Rose. He is further survived by a sister, Florence and her husband Emery Jogodzinski of Wisconsin Rapids; and by his three sons, John L., James and Fredrick; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. He also is survived by Mary’s brother, Robert, and sisters Alice and Doris and their families, children and grandchildren whom he loved.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Tomah. The Rev. Kathy Charles officiated. Burial followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah. Family and friends called for visitation Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, from 4-7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Tomah, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
