Charles Lane "Chuck" ROESKE and Judith A. "Judy" BUCHMAN were married on 29 June 1963 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.³⁹ Judith A. "Judy" BUCHMAN was born on 17 June 1941 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.³⁹ She died on 26 April 2021 at the age of 79 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^39,40

Obituary Notes: "Judith “Judy” A. Roeske, 79 of Tomah passed away on Monday, April 26, 2021 at her home with her loving husband by her side.  She was born on June 17, 1941 to Frederick and Goldie (Allen) Buchman in Sparta, WI.  She was a member of the Norwalk High School Graduating Class of 1959.  

At the age of 17, Judy set off on a train to Madison where she began her nursing career.  Attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and after 5 year of work returned home, taking a position at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Tomah as a Licensed Practical Nurse.  

On one particular night out with her girlfriends after bowling, Judy caught the eye of a young man, Charles “Chuck” Roeske and on June 29, 1963, they were united in marriage at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church.  Throughout her almost 35 years at the Tomah VA, Judy worked in just about every nursing departments.  She had a passion for helping veterans, especially in the Mental Health/Psychiatry specialty units. Providing nursing care to the veterans, she would consider her most rewarding accomplishment in her nursing career.  

After her retirement in 1997, Judy turned right around and was hired back as the Head of Volunteer Services and for the next 9 years continued to advocate for veterans, especially in the homeless veteran’s program as well as others that volunteered. During those years, she travelled to numerous conventions around the state.  For Judy, the most important part of her time at the VA was to make sure the veterans she so dearly respected and loved had the proper care they all deserved.  

From 1973-1980, along with her husband, Chuck, Judy co-own/operated the Buckhorn Tavern in Tomah, although she wasn’t behind the bar too often, she was hard at work behind the scenes keeping the books. 

In her younger years, Judy was an avid bowler.  She also played fast pitch and slow pitch softball, as catcher, playing well into her late 40’s early 50’s and as long as her body allowed her, she continued to be as active as possible.  

Judy was a faithful member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church and served on the Esther Circle.  She was a member of the American Ladies Auxiliary Post 201 and had served as past auxiliary president.  

Judy had a heart for adventure.  Together with Chuck, they travelled throughout the United States, the golfing trips to Tennessee with friends and visiting the World of Coca-Cola, were some of their most memorable.  If there was one thing that Judy absolutely loved, it was the Cracker Barrel.  Her family would tell you,  there isn’t a Cracker Barrel between Tomah, Wisconsin and Gatlinburg, Tennessee in which they didn’t know Judy by name. Not only did she enjoyed the food, but also perusing the gift shop, where she could always sniff out the best bargains.  Collecting, Coca-Cola memorabilia and trains were of few of the items, Judy would keep an eye open for during their travels. 
 
The Roeske family has been active participants for numerous years with the Tomah Tractor Pull.  Judy and Cindy’s primary duties where to assist the pullers and their families getting registered and set up with the amenities that were offered. Many special bonds and friendships were formed year in and year out with the pullers and their families, particularly with a puller that was a double amputee; a physical disability in which Judy understood the challenges.  Attending Packer games, trips to the casino, and playing cards with the poker club were just a few more of Judy’s pastimes. 
 
Above all, Judy’s greatest accomplishment was that of a wife, mother and grandmother.  A husband that she loved beyond measure, a daughter, Cindy, whom was a friend and a confidant, and her wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Words cannot express the amount of love and joy they brought her watching them grow throughout the years and her, son-in-law, Dave whom she dearly loved as her own.  Judy was just simply a wonderful person, the span of those she touched in her lifetime is unmeasurable.  

She is survived by her husband, Chuck of Tomah, a daughter, Cindy (Dave) Mysliwiec of La Crosse, 3 grandchildren, Tyler Mysliwiec of La Crosse, Carley (Eric) Miller of Onalaska and Kelsey Mysliwiec of La Crosse, 3 great grandchildren, Eric, Wayne, and Olivia.  She is further survived by nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. 

She was preceded in death by her  parents, sister, Jeanne, brother, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Elmer Sr. and Joyce (Huddleson) Roeske brothers-in-law, Fred, Elmer Jr. and Lon.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 3, 2021, 11:00 AM at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, 525 Superior Ave., Tomah.  The Pastors of St. Paul will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.  Relatives and friends are invited for a time of visitation on Sunday, May 2, 2021 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 E. Monowau Street, Tomah and on Monday at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of the service."
