After 1825 John was a farmer in Springfield Center, Springfield Township, Otsego County, NY.⁹³ at the foot of Mt. Tom.

It is believed that he built the farm and its Greek Revival farmhouse that were owned by the author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings in the 1930's. His name is carved in one of the beams in the barn. John ROOT Sr. and Lydia "Liddie" ARMSTRONG were married about 1836.^46,93 Lydia "Liddie" ARMSTRONG, daughter of Levi ARMSTRONG and Rebecca MARSHALL, was born on 20 December 1809 in Franklin, New London County, CT.^{10,22,40,47,97} (The 1850 and 1880 Census' listed her birth place as New York.)
