He appeared in the census in 1870 in Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.⁸⁷ His occupation was "Farmer." The value of his Real Estate was $2,900 and that of his Personal Estate was $1,200.

Obituary Notes: "Erastus Root, one of the oldest and most respected residents of this village, died on Apr. 14th on the farm on which he was born 86 years ago, March 26th, having resided on the same farm all his life.

Mr. Root was one of the substantial men of the town and owned one of the best farms in North Valley. His death will be greatly felt in the community.

Mr. Root is survived by a widow and one daughter, Mrs. Hastings of Hornell, and also by a granddaughter." He was buried in 1910 at Arkport Heritage Hill Cemetery in Arkport, Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.¹⁷⁹ (It must be confirmed that his Erastus was the son of William and Charity. Another male of the same name was reportedly born two years later, in 1826.)
