Orrill Harriet ROOT was born on 24 October 1853 in Springboro, Spring Township, Crawford County, PA.1,3,122,125,164,188,189,190,237 In a letter to her father dated 26 August 1864, she spelled her name as "Orrill." Her gravestone also spells it as "Orrill." The Root Family Bible lists it as "Orril." The 1860 Census lists her as "Orril" and the 1880 Census lists her as "Orrill H," as does The Monroe County Marriage Registration Index. Other family info lists the spelling as "Aurel" or "Orrel." She was most likely named after a sister of her father.

In a letter from her mother to her father dated 30 August 1864, her mother refers to her as "Ollie."

(The Root Family Bible, her gravestone, and Jay Root's research lists her birth year as 1853; the LDS IGI Index lists it as 1854. The 1860 Census lists her age as 9, indicating a birth year of about 1851.) She appeared in the census in 1860 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.122 She appeared in the census in 1870 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.136 She (before her marriage) was living with her brother Ira (before his marriage) and their mother. Orrill appeared in the census in 1880 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.164 She appeared in the census in 1900 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.54 She and her children lived at 515 Stoughton Avenue in the 2nd Ward. She lived in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI on 1 June 1905.238 Orrill appeared in the census in 1910 in Warrens, Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.168 She and her daughters Grace and Jennie lived on Church Street in Warrens. She died on 10 April 1916 at the age of 62 in Warrens, Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.1,3,126,237 She was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.99,239 in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Orrill Harriet ROOT and William Henry JENNINGS were married on 1 January 1873 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.3,43,54,119,130,168,204,237 The 1900 and 1910 Census' indicated that they had 6 children, of whom 4 were still living. William Henry JENNINGS, son of George Henry JENNINGS and Harriet CLUTTON, was born on 16 December 1844 in Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, NY.164,237 He appeared in the census in 1850 in Cape Vincent Township, Jefferson County, NY.240 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Worth, Jefferson County, NY.241 His occupation was listed as "G. Laborer." William appeared in the census in 1870 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.136 He was living with his sister Alice in the household of Simeon Wood. Before 1873 he was a lumberman in Wisconsin Dells, Columbia County, WI.237 After 1873 he was a clerk in the Tomah Hardware Store in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.237 He was also a druggist. Before 1880 William was a teacher in teacher's colleges in Wisconsin. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.164 His occupation was "Farmer."

She appeared in the census in 1910 in Warrens, Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.168 She was living with her mother.

Jennie Alice "J. Alice" JENNINGS was born on 13 August 1877 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.54,164,237,240 (She was always called "J. Alice.") She appeared in the census in 1880 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.164 Between 1894 and about 1930 she was a school teacher.240,243 "She began teaching school in September 1894 and continued until 1901, when she attended Stevens Point Normal School and graduated in 1902. She became a high school principal and later a county superintendent of schools. She attended several other schools during summer vacation, including three terms at Chicago University.

She never married and retired in Portland, Oregon. She wrote me (Ella Johnson) many letters from 1972 until Sep. 1974. I have saved all of the letters. In the last letter, she wrote a four page letter and ended it with a poem she wrote after having a stroke in 1969:

"A crippled old lady named Alice,
viewed the world, not quite with malice.
She had to sit in her chair,
or just take the air,
when she'd rather skip around in a palace."

J. Alice graduated in 1894 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.244,245 from Tomah High School.

On January 12, 1971, when she was in her nineties, Jennie wrote the following letter to Marita Root (the letter accompanied pictures of Jason B. and Ephraim Root):

"It would take too many pages to tell you about Uncle Ephraim and Uncle Jason. I would love to do so, but musn't. My eyes are too tired. There was always excitement when Uncle Jason dropped in on us as a surprise, as he often used to do. And it was a great day for us children when a sleigh load of us cousins with some of our parents made the ten-mile drive to the pioneer home of Uncle Ephraim and Aunt Ann, northwest of Tomah. There was always a wonderful chicken dinner, though there were no telephones and they were taken by surprise. Aunt Ann was as jolly as she looks."

Everyone in the family referred to her as "Aunt Jennie." She never married. She appeared in the census in 1900 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.54 She appeared in the census in 1910 in Warrens, Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.168 She was living with her mother. J. Alice appeared in the census in 1920 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, WI.223 She was a "Roomer" with Nellie Culbertson at 616 Cass Street, and her occupation was listed as "Assistant Supervisor, Public Schools."

(She could not be located in the 1930 Census in La Crosse, Monroe or Jackson counties.)

(She cannot be located in the 1930 Census.) She appeared in the census in 1930 in Crookston, Polk County, MN.246 She was a "Lodger" in the household of Dan and Fannie Smiley and her occupation was "Teacher, Public School."

. J. Alice appeared in the census in 1940 in Roseway, Multnomah County, OR.247 According to the census she was living in Crookston, Polk County, MN in 1935. She died on 22 December 1974 at the age of 97 in Clackamas County, OR.238,240
