Seventh Generation

267. Joseph ROOT Sr. (=) was born on 13 July 1732 in Coventry, Tolland County, CT.11

The following is from 'The Roots of Coventry, Connecticut', page 182: "He sold his farm in Coventry in 1788 to Jabez and Jeremiah Ripley and took his family to settle in that part of Whitestown, New York, now known as Oriskany and Marcy. He is listed in the 1790 Census of Whitestown, New York. He was one of the first trustees of the United Presbyterian Societies of Whitestown and Old Fort Schuyler."

"Joseph served as a minute man from Coventry, Connecticut during the Lexington Alarm of April 20, 1775, in Capt. Elias Buell's Company (4th Co.), Col. Thomas Brown's Regiment (5th Reg.) of the Connecticut State Militia; he served two days. He was elected Ensign by this company September 7, 1775, then under the command of Lieut. Jeremiah Ripley in Lieut. Col. Storr's 5th Regiment. He was elected Lieutenant of this same company on April 22, 1777, and in May of 1781, he was elected Captain. (This may be the same Joseph Root who served as a Private in Capt. Solomon Will's Company (Of Tolland), in Col. Spencer's Regiment at Roxbury near Boston, from May 1 to December 1, 1775; this was shortly after the Lexington Alarm, but conflicts with the time of his promotion to Ensign in Capt. Buill's Company).

In the Winter of 1777/1778, he allegedly served as Captain of a Connecticut Militia Company under Col. Branen in service at Rhode Island (Pension records of Joseph Root Jr.). Joseph's name is listed in a tattered account ledger from his company in which he appears to have bought 200 pounds of pork, making partial payment with 10 quarts of salt valued at 1. 8. 2. The remainder of the payment was made in cash to the amount of 16. 1. 10. (National Archives 034621) "

The following was printed in the Families of Olde Whitesborough 1784-1824 by Hugh White: "The Root Family was quite numerours in the early records of Whitestown, but they settled mainly in those parts of Whitestown that eventually became Oriskany and the Town of Marcy. Joseph Root, Sr., was listed in the 1790 Census of Whitestown and he was also one of the first Trustees of The United Presbyterian Societies of Whitestown and Old Fort Schuyler. In the year 1800 Elizur Moseley purchased land of Joseph Root and Nathaniel Townsend, this land was located on what is now Clinton Street." He died in 1816 at the age of 84 in New York.11
