264. General Jesse ROOT Sr. was born on 28 December 1736 in Coventry, Tolland County, CT.10,11,35

From the Richard Ripley Research: "In a chapter entitled 'Lawyers, originally preachers,' Clark mentions Jesse Root, son of Ebenezer (446?) and Sarah Strong Root (grandson of Thomas Sr.): born 1736; P.C. 1756; studied law, admitted to practice 1763, and settled in Hartford. Member of the Continental Congress, 1778-83. Judge of the Superior Court 1789, Chief Justice of Conn. 1796-1807. Colonel in Revolutionary War, adjutant general. An 'eminent Christian, a pillar in the church. Even to the last he attended the prayer meeting.' Died 1822, aged 85."

He appeared in the census in 1810 in Coventry, Tolland County, CT.57 His household consisted of 1 male, age 45 and over (Jesse, 74); 1 female, age 10 through 15; 1 female, age 26 through 44; and 2 females, age 45 and over (one of which was probably his wife, Mary, 78). He served in the military about 1812.10 He served in the Continental Army. Jesse died on 29 March 1822 at the age of 85 in Coventry, Tolland County, CT.10,11,35

General Jesse ROOT Sr. and Ruth Mary BANKS were married on 13 May 1758 in Newark, Essex County, NJ.10,11 Ruth Mary BANKS, daughter of Thomas BANKS and Sarah OSBORNE, was born on 12 April 1736 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, CT.10 She died on 5 December 1813 at the age of 77 in Coventry, Tolland County, CT.10,11
