21. Wilbur Edward "Bill" THUROW was born on 24 January 1922 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^2,13,29 He died on 1 April 2009 at the age of 87 in Wausau, Maine Township, Marathon County, WI.²⁹

Obituary Notes: "Wilbur Edward Thurow, age 87, of Forest Park Village, Wausau, formerly of Tomah died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

Wilbur was born on Jan. 24, 1922, in Tomah to the late Edward F. and Tillie (Schoot) Thurow. He married Verdene C. Steele on March 8, 1947, in Tomah; she preceded him in death on July 5, 1981.

Wilbur was a WWII Army Air Corps veteran and was employed with the Department of the Army from 1946-1978 at Camp (Fort) McCoy where he was the Surplus Property Disposal Officer for a five-state area. He was a past president of the Tomah Rotary Club and a 50-year Masonic member and a member of the Zor Shrine and Order of the Eastern Star.

He enjoyed music from playing his trombone in various Army bands to singing barbershop to directing church choirs, and enjoyed attending family, school and community concerts. Wilbur also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, traveling and other outdoor activities including professional landscaping.

Survivors include two sons, Greg (Beth) Thurow, Sheridan, WY, and Dave (Posy) Thurow, Neenah; two daughters, Susan Szmanda, Wausau, and Sandy (Matthew) Hill, Goshen, IN; 10 grandchildren, Carolyn (Jared) Banks, St. Paul, John (Arianna) Thurow, and Michael Thurow both of Sheridan, WY, Edward (Ryan) Thurow, Waterloo, IA, Anne Thurow, Madison, Katie and Andrew Szmanda, both of Wausau, William and Julia Szmanda, Madison, and Molly Hill, Goshen, IN, and and three great-grandchildren, Zachary and Gabriel Thurow, Sheridan, WY, and Madeline Verdene Banks, St. Paul.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Dr. Jack Szmanda.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at the First United Methodist Church, Tomah."

Wilbur Edward "Bill" THUROW and Verdene Carol STEELE were married on 8 March 1947 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^2,29 Verdene Carol STEELE, daughter of Carl Wilkinson STEELE and Kittie Mae MORSE, was born on 23 July 1927 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.^13,17,30,31 She appeared in the census in 1930 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁷ She died on 5 July 1981 at the age of 53.^2,30
