Marjorie Violet "Marge" RETTAMMEL (~)⁵⁵ was born on 17 January 1921 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^{9,36,52,56,57,58,59,60,61} The Monroe County birth registration records list her name as "Marjorie Violet Griggs." She was born out of wedlock after the first husband of her mother had died. Her birth father is believed to have been Floyd Thompson, whom her mother married in 1923. Marge was placed for adoption and took the surname of the Rettammel family that adopted her.

The 1910 Census of the city of Tomah contains a listing for Edward H. Rettamel, age 30 (1880-1963), born in Illinois, and his wife Evaline V. (Wilson), age 25 (1885-1974), born in Wisconsin. They were her adoptive parents.
