Obituary Notes: "The usual morning services in the M.E. church gave way last Sunday to the funeral of Dwight Thompson, whose death occured on Thursday evening of last week. Rev. Charles Butters conducted the services which were very largely attended. The Grand Army Post, of which Mr. Thompson was a valued member, turned out in large numbers and performed the last rites at the grave of their comrade. The remains were laid to rest in the La Grange cemetery, where the first wife and two children of the deceased were buried. He leaves a wife, one son, a step-daughter and a step-son to mourn his loss.

Dwight Thompson was born in the state of New York, Sept. 14, 1839, and was therefore in his sixtieth year at the time of death. He was among Tomah's early settlers, having come here as early as 1855, and lived here ever since except the years when he was in the service of his country. His health was seriously impaired in the service, and disease contracted then cut short his years.

A comrade furnishes the following brief sketch of his army life: Dwight Thompson enlisted in Co. H, 10th Reg. Wis. Vol. Infantry, Aug. 31, 1861, and was mustered out Nov. 3, 1864; was wounded at Perryville, Ky. and at Tunnel Hill.

At Tunnel Hill he performed an act that made him conspicuous for bravery. He and others were ordered to charge the enemy's rifle pits. The fire of the enemy was so hot that all faltered but Thompson. He kept advancing until he obtained a position from which he could overlook the enemy's works, where he discovered he was the only man that had advanced. Turning around to our boys, he calls out: "Come on boys; we can take them." They all rallied upon Comrade Thompson and the rebels were driven from their works.

He was always ready for duty and performed well each task assigned him."
