(The 1850 Census for Oceana County, MI, contains the household of John "Ban," age 40, born in New York; his wife Harriet, age 21, born in New York; and their son, George, age 2/12, born in Michigan. Because there are no other children in the household, it is doubtful that it was John Whitman's family, but they cannot be located in Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin or elsewhere in 1850.) He died in 1854 at the age of 45.¹
