Sophia "Sophie" BUSACK and August NEHLS Sr. were married about 1850 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Province, Preussen (Prussia).18 August NEHLS Sr. was born on 16 January 1825 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Province, Preussen (Prussia).18,19,21 (The 1860 Census lists his birthplace as Mecklenburg.) . He emigrated in 1856 from Preussen (Prussia).22 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Rowley Township, Manitowoc County, WI.19 His occupation was "Lumberman." (His surname is listed as "Neals" in the Ancestry.com census index.) August appeared in the census in 1870 in Kewaunee, Kewaunee County, WI.18,23 His household, near the Red River post office, consisted of August, age 45, born in "Midlebourg," occupation "Laborer;" his wife, Sophia, age 44, born in Midlebourg, occupation "Housekeeper;" their daughter, Mary, age 18, born in Midlebourg, occupation "Housekeeper;" daughter Louisa, age 14, born in Midlebourg; son August, age 10, born in Wisconsin; son Joseph, age 7, born in Wisconsin; and Fred, age 3/12, born in Wisconsin. (Fred is believed to have been the son of August's daughter Mary, although the census form does not specify his parents.) . . He died on 11 May 1914 at the age of 89 in Escanaba, Delta County, MI.21,24,25 Obituary Notes: "After an illness of but two days, August Nehls, Sr., passed away yesterday morning at the home of his son, August Nehls, Jr., at 618 Maple street. In spite of his advanced years, Mr. Nehls had enjoyed excellent health and from Friday was about the home as usual. Some time on Friday night, he suffered from a stroke of paralysis and yesterday morning at 6 o'clock he passed away. Mr. Nehls was born in Germany in 1825 and came to the United States in 1856. He located first in Milwaukee, but later settled at Kewaunee. From that place he enlisted in the Civil War in 1862 and served throughout the war, receiving his honorable discharge at the close of the conflict in 1865. He returned to Kewaunee at the close of the war and resumed his residence there, coming to Escanaba to make his home in 1892. He was the father of four sons and two daughters, two sons and a daughter surviving him. August and Joseph Nehls of this city are the surviving sons. Funeral services will be conducted over the body at the St. Paul's German Lutheran Church at 2:30 o'clock on Friday afternoon, Rev. William Peters officiating. Interment will be at Lakeview cemetery." . August was buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Escanaba, Delta County, MI.21 Sophia "Sophie" BUSACK and August NEHLS Sr. had the following children:
