Jesse Wood EVANS was born on 17 February 1823 in Livonia, Livingston County, NY.1 He appeared in the census in 1850 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.22 His household consisted of Jesse, age 28; Harriet, age 18, and their son, Daniel, age 8/12. His occupation was "Farmer." He appeared in the census in 1855 in Angelica Township, Allegany County, NY.23 His occupation was "Farmer." Jesse appeared in the census in 1860 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.24 He appeared in the census in 1870 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.25 His household consisted of Jesse, Harriet, and their children Daniel, Mary, Charles and Warren, and "Clarissa Gage," age 76, a widow. That was Harriet's mother, who had re-married Elias Gage in about 1863. He died on 31 May 1879 at the age of 56 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.1,26 Obituary Notes: "EVANS, JESSE WOOD (1823-1879) Born Feb. 17, 1823, of Luther and Polly Merriman Evans, at Livonia, N.Y. Married Harriet Griswold Nov. 11, 1848. At age, 41 years he enlisted at Hornellsville to serve in the Civil War; mustered in as private, Co. I, 189th N.Y. Infantry, October 3, 1864; mustered out with Company, May 30, 1865, near Washington, D.C. After the war he resumed his occupation as farmer in West Almond. Died May, 31, 1879. Children: Daniel, Mary, Charles, Warren, and Henry. Survivors: widow; four sons." Jesse was buried in Angelica Township, Allegany County, NY.1,27 in Lot 158 of the "Until The Day Dawn" Cemetery. Jesse Wood EVANS and Harriet GRISWOLD were married on 11 November 1848 in New York.1,9,22,28 (He may have been related to Charles H. Evans, who married Harriet's oldest sister, Hannah Jane.) According to the 1910 Census, they had 5 children, of whom 4 were living at the time. Harriet GRISWOLD, daughter of Samuel J. GRISWOLD and Clarissa PETTINGILL, was born on 23 August 1831 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.1,14,29 (Her obituary says that she was born "in the town of West Almond." Other sources list her birth place as "Almond.") (This is a picture of the cemetery where she is buried.) She appeared in the census in 1840 in Burns Township, Allegany County, NY.2 She appeared in the census in 1850 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.22,30 Harriet lived in Angelica Township, Allegany County, NY in 1855.23,30 (Her brother Hiram was living with her and her family.) She appeared in the census in 1860 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.24,30 She appeared in the census in 1870 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.25 Harriet appeared in the census in 1880 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.30,31 Her household consisted of herself (her husband had apparently died), her son Charlie, her son Warren, her son Henry, and their servant, Adelina Bloyet (?). She lived at her home in Michigan before June 1900.32,33 She appeared in the census in June 1900 in Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.9,31,33 She was living with her son Charles and his family. The Census indicates that 4 of her 5 children were still living in 1900; Mary must have died because she was not listed with the rest of the family during the 1880 Census. She was still living in New York state when her brother Samuel died in September 1902. Harriet appeared in the census in 1910 in Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.28 She was a Widow and was living with her son Charles and his family. She died on 18 September 1910 at the age of 79 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.1,9,29 Obituary Notes: "EVANS, HARRIET GRISWOLD Daughter of Samuel and Clarissa Pettingill Griswold; born in the town of West Almond, August 23, 1831, and died Sept. 18, 1910 in the 80th year of her age. She was married to Jesse Evans in 1848, and with him moved back to West Almond in 1850; husband died in 1879. During most of her later years of her life she made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Evans in West Almond. Survivors: children Daniel, Charles, Warren, and Henry." (She is mentioned in her sister Mary's obituary as still living in New York State with her son Charles at the time of Mary's death in April 1905. In her brother Hiram's book, which was published in late-1908, she is listed as one of the two surviving children of the twelve in the family. Hiram was the other.)
