Rudolph GRASSMAN Sr. was born on 10 August 1816 in Frankfurt an der Oder, Brandenburg Province, Preussen (Prussia).1,2,3,4,5 From the research of Paul Grassman: "The family oral tradition is that he was the mayor of a small town near Frankfurt, Germany (I am not sure which Frankfurt - there are two in Germany, one in western Germany and one in eastern Germany). He had to leave on one day's notice, and left a wife and family behind. He went first to Australia, then to Canada, and finally settled in Richland County, Wisconsin, in June 1854. See <http://www.usgennet.org/usa/wi/county/richland/books/chap26.htm> and do a search on Grassman (note the first name is spelled Rudolf). He married Rosa in September 1854 in Dodge County, Wisconsin (I have a copy of the marriage certificate). Although I know that Rosa claimed later to have come with him from Prussia, I am inclined to doubt that, and I strongly believe that she met Rudolph in Wisconsin. As I mentioned, Rudolph left a wife and family behind in Germany. One of the children that he left behind, Lewis Grassman, later joined him in Richland County. Lewis Grassman was born September 15, 1844, and died October 18, 1905. He appears to have emigrated to Wisconsin sometime around 1856-1857. See <http://www.usgennet.org/usa/wi/county/richland/1857sch.htm> . Since Rosa was born in 1830, I don't think that he was her biological son. Sometime around 1870, Rudolph Grassman and his family left Richland County and settled in Clifton in Monroe County."
