Stephen "Roswell" GRIGGS was born on 6 December 1825 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.250,332 (This is a picture of the Winston Cemetery in Daviess County, MO, where Stephen Roswell, his wife Roxana, their sons Olin and Elton, and his sister Susan are buried.) He appeared in the census in 1830 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.265 He appeared in the census in 1840 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.266 Roswell appeared in the census in 1850 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.327 In October 1850 he was a laborer, living on the farm of his brother, John Chandler in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.259 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.260 His household consisted of himself; his wife, Roxana; their son, Olin S; and their daughter, Flora A. His occupation was "Farmer." His farm was next to that of Nathaniel Wait, for whom Waitsfield Township, VT, was named. Roswell lived in Vermont before 1865.250 On 13 February 1863, Roswell's brother Lucius sent a letter to him in which he mentions the following: "Roswell, if you think of coming west, now is a good time. The Homestead Act gives a man 160 acres of land for 11 dollars anywhere they can find it." He moved to Wisconsin a few years later. He appeared in the census on 3 June 1870 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.332 His household consisted of "Stephen R.," age 44, farmer; his wife, "Roxinah" (Roxana) 37; his son, Olin S., age 13; his daughter, "Florey A." (Flora) age 11; and his son, Elton L., age 8. All were listed as having been born in Vermont. After 1870 he was a farmer in Jefferson Township, Daviess County, MO.250,376 In the 1870's, Roswell and his family moved to a farm in Daviess County, MO. His mailing address was Winston, MO, which is located in Colfax Township in Daviess County; but his farm was actually located in Jefferson Township, directly north of Colfax Township, in Daviess County.

A letter written to him on 3 August 1879 by his brother Lucius was addressed to him in "Emporia, Mo."
Roswell appeared in the census in 1876 in Daviess County, MO.377 His household was in Township 59 and consisted of "Stephen R."; his wife, Roxany; and their three children. The census record indicates that he had 2 horses, 3 cows, 6 pigs and 200 bushels of corn. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Jefferson Township, Daviess County, MO.376 His household consisted of himself, his wife, Roxana, and their sons Olin and Elton. His occupation was "Farmer." He appeared in the census in 1900 in Jefferson Township, Daviess County, MO.378 His household consisted of "Stephen R.," his wife, Roxana, and their sons Olin and Elton. His occupation was "Farmer." Roswell died on 25 October 1908 at the age of 82 in Daviess County, MO.250 He was buried in 1908 in Winston, Colfax Township, Daviess County, MO.272 in the Winston Cemetery. He is buried next to his wife and their son Elton. The cemetery is located about 1/2 mile east of Winston at the intersection of 140th Street and Highway 6, east of I-35.
He had his estate probated on 15 February 1910 in Daviess County, MO.379 His executor was his son Elton.

Stephen "Roswell" GRIGGS and Roxana M. "Roxany" LISCOMB were married on 8 May 1855 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.84,250,318 The Vermont Historical Society Library has a collection of letters to Roswell, his wife Roxana and their son Elton that were received over a 50-year period from his brother Lucius, his sister Susan and various other family members. The collection is identified as part of the "Griggs-Bragg Family Letters." They were viewed and many were copied by Gary Griggs on July 26, 2002. Roxana M. "Roxany" LISCOMB, daughter of Cyrus LISCOMB and Charlotte SCHLAGEL, was born on 17 August 1832 in Moretown, Washington County, VT.250,332,378,380,381 (Her birth place was listed as New York in the 1920 and 1930 Census records of her son Elton. That is believed to have been erroneous.)

She died on 25 July 1911 at the age of 78 in Jefferson Township, Daviess County, MO.250,381 Roxany was buried in Winston, Colfax Township, Daviess County, MO.272 in the Winston Cemetery. Her gravestone lists the dates of "1832 - 1911." She is buried next to her husband and her son Elton.

Olin Schlagel GRIGGS was born on 9 October 1856 in Vermont.250,332,383 In a letter from his aunt, Florence Griggs Bigelow, she mentions that his birth date was 25 October.

He is buried next to his father's sister, Susan Griggs, and near his parents and his brother Elton.

Elton Lucius GRIGGS was born on 22 July 1863 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.250,262,263,381 (His gravestone lists his birth year as 1861.)

(The LDS IGI records of the residents of Vermont and the FamilySearch.org website list an additional daughter in the family. Her name was "Eltna" and her birth date was 22 Jul 1863. The "daughter" was not listed in the 1870 or later Census records, so it is believed that the person was Elton.) He appeared in the census in 1870 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.332 He appeared in the census in 1876 in Daviess County, MO.377 Elton appeared in the census in 1880 in Jefferson Township, Daviess County, MO.376 He was living with his parents and his occupation was "Laborer."

Several letters written to him by his father's brother, Lucius S. Griggs, in 1884-1886 listed his address as Kidder, Mo. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Jefferson Township, Daviess County, MO.369,378 He was living with his parents and his occupation was "Farmer." A letter written to him on 15 February 1891 from his father's brother, Lucius, listed his address as Winston, Mo. He lived at his home in Altamont, Liberty Township, Daviess County, MO in June 1903.384 His mailing address was Route I, Daviess Corners, Altamont, MO.
Elton appeared in the census in 1910 in Jefferson Township, Daviess County, MO.385 His household consisted of himself and his mother. He appeared in the census in 1920 in Jefferson Township, Daviess County, MO.382 He was living by himself and was listed as age 58, "Single," and occupation "Farmer." He appeared in the census in 1930 in Jefferson Township, Daviess County, MO.386 He was living by himself and was listed as age 68, "Single," occupation "Farmer." Elton died on 13 June 1940 at the age of 76 in Altamont, Liberty Township, Daviess County, MO.250 He was buried in Winston, Colfax Township, Daviess County, MO.272 in the Winston Cemetery near his parents.
