Evans, 83, of Viroqua, died unexpectedly Friday, March 30, 2012, at his home. He was born Jan. 23, 1929, in Tomah to Van and Vila (Heser) Evans. Verland attended Tomah High School and then was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served in the Korean War from 1951-53 and was honorably discharged. On Oct. 10, 1953, he married Pauline Bailey in Decorah, Iowa. The couple then moved to Milwaukee, where Verland was employed at Milwaukee Tool. He worked there until his retirement in 1993, and then he and Pauline moved to Viroqua. Verland enjoyed working on his mini farm and the company of his neighbors and friends. Every year Verland looked forward to being a chauffeur to the quilt show in Chicago for Pauline and her friends. He also was a longtime member of Our Father’s Lutheran Church in Greenfield. Verland will be sadly missed by his family, friends and his feline friend, Benji. Verland is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pauline Evans; his children, Dale Evans and Diane (Mark) Konkel; grandchildren Teresa and Matthew Evans; four great-grandchildren, all of Milwaukee; two brothers, Vernon Evans and Victor Evans, both of Tomah; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Vergean Jordan; and two brothers, Valdon Evans and Vance Evans. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given in Verland’s name to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, La Crosse. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Gundersen Lutheran Cardiac Care Unit Sixth Floor West." .
