Steinhoff, 81, of Tomah, passed away on March 1, 2005, at the Morrow Memorial Home in Sparta. He was born on March 13, 1923, in Lyons Valley, rural Monroe County, to Frank and Clara (Schaller) Steinhoff. On May 22, 1948, he married, Geraldine Jones in Tomah. Gerald and Geraldine raised their four children and farmed just outside the city of Tomah. The Steinhoffs, along with their good friends and neighbors, Howard and Margaret Zastoupil, co-hosted the 1980 Farm Progress Days. Gerald served on the Tomah Co-op Services and the West Salem-Tomah Transportation Board of Directors. He was a 4-H leader for over 25 years, a past FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer, and belonged to the Tomah Knights of Columbus. Gerald was known for his humor and positive outlook on life, despite a debilitating stroke in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine; three sons, William (Ruth) Steinhoff of Tomah, John (Kari) Steinhoff of Tomah and Dave (Laurie Bowen) Steinhoff of New Lisbon; one daughter, Judy (Robert Couch) Yates of Tampa, FL; one brother, Ken Steinhoff of Sparta; one sister, Elaine Metropolit of Seattle, WA; seven grandchildren, Kristopher (Julie) Steinhoff, Andrea (Troy) Tessman, Emillie (Jason Nicholson) Steinhoff, Jason (Carrie) Yates, Karen (Albert) Spradley, Whitney Steinhoff, and Ryan Steinhoff; four great-grandchildren, Nolan Tessman, Sabin Steinhoff, and Irijah and Ariyana Spradley; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Clara; three brothers, Leonard, Harold and Bernard Steinhoff; and one sister, Gertrude Atteln. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 4, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sparta. The Rev. James Leary O.F.M. Cap. will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Tomah. The Tomah VFW Post 1382 will conduct military honors. Family and friends are invited for visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today (Thursday), March 3, at the Torkelson Page Smith Funeral Home in Sparta, and at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials be given to a scholarship in Gerald's name through the Tomah FFA Alumni. On May 22, 1948, she married Gerald Steinhoff. Gerald and Geraldine raised their four children and farmed just outside the city of Tomah.
