(Hinkell) Lamb, 91, of Tomah, passed away Monday, June 21, 2011, at Rolling Hills Rehab Center in Sparta. Dorothy was born in Chicago on Nov. 13, 1919, to Walter and Mabel (Armburster) Hinkell. She was the youngest of five children, three brothers and her only sister who died at the young age of 5 of whooping cough. As a child she was raised in Chicago by her parents. As a child she and her family would spend winters in Florida. It was during the Depression, and they would move wherever her father was able to find work despite the hard times. She met her future husband, George Lamb, while working at Spangler and Loomis in Rockford where George’s Aunt Etta introduced her to George. She also worked at Woolworth’s in Chicago as a waitress at the lunch counter where she eventually became a manager with her own store. Dorothy worked there until she and George were married on May 1, 1943, and they moved to Tomah. She and George had two sons, Terry and Bob. When her parents retired, they moved to Tomah where Dorothy cared for them until they passed away. Later she started working as a child care provider and did housekeeping for several families in Tomah. In 1966, one of the families she worked for offered her a job as a custodian in the new Tomah High School. In the mid-1970s, Dorothy’s cousin, Shelly Lamb, came to live with them when she was 8 years old. Dorothy loved her and raised her like a daughter. Dorothy retired from the high school in 1982, after working there for 16 years. Then she retired to the hog farm where she helped Terry with chores. She also cherished the times spent helping to raise her grandchildren. Dorothy’s last four and one half years were spent at Rolling Hills Nursing Home. Here she was known as the life of the party, a feisty gal who always got the last say in things. Dorothy was a fun, spirited person.
