He turned down a chance to file on land in the Palouse, Whitman Co, AS area and went in the woods near Sandpoint, Bonner Co, Idaho, living in a little open gabled log cabin. He worked two winters in the woods there, while doing work on his claim at odd times. He began doing odd jobs at threshing, well drilling, building etc.

He drilled his first well near Lind, Adams Co, WA. Mr. Dougherty was one of his first associates in that business. By 1903 he had worked his way to Pendleton, Umatilla Co, OR and began drilling wells. He was one of the pioneers in the steam threshing in the area and was said to be the first man to drive and operate a track type tractor, driving the one purchased by R.L. Jones. He became the mechanic who serviced many of the tractors and combines in the area and later became a partner in the firm of Eberl and Temple, harvest equipment and suppliers."
