He emigrated in 1850 from Switzerland.¹ He appeared in the census in 1880 in Clifton Township, Monroe County, WI.⁴ Joseph appeared in the census in 1900 in Clifton Township, Monroe County, WI.¹ He died on 9 May 1907 at the age of 66 in Clifton Township, Monroe County, WI.^2,3 He was buried in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.² in the St. Michael's Cemetery.

Joseph M. "Joe" MISTELE and Auguste FISCHER were married on 26 December 1872 in Monroe County, WI.^1,4,5 According to the 1900 Census, they had been married for 28 years and had 7 children, of whom 6 were still living at the time. The Monroe County Index to Birth Registrations lists Anna Bertha Mistele with a birthdate of 15 Apr 1882, so that is probably her.
