Maum, age 93, of Tomah, Wis., passed away Monday, June 28, 2010, at Cranberry Court in Tomah. She was born March 21, 1917, to Louis and Clara (Eirschele) Thom in Tomah. She was united in marriage to Lyle Maum June 29, 1935, at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tomah. Irene worked as a nurse’s assistant at Tomah Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. She was very active in various service organizations. Irene was a lifetime member and past president of the VFW Auxiliary and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she helped with many fish fries. She was a longtime member of the Oakdale Happy Hour Club. Irene served as president of the Tomah Hospital Auxiliary where she had been a member since 1968. Through Auxiliary she worked at the ABC Store every Tuesday morning, often hurrying off to play euchre at the Senior Center, hoping to get either high score or at least a booby prize. She also volunteered at the Red Cross Bloodmobile and the Frank King Museum. She was a former member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Clifton where she served as past president of the Altar Guild and sang in the choir. Irene was a dedicated member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she served as past Guild President and helped with many activities such as funerals, bake sales, leading the rosary at morning mass and funeral visitations of PCCW members and assisted the residents of Rolling Hills to Mass on many occasions. She is survived by her children, Roland (Karen) Maum of Beloit, Wis., Charles (Pamela) Maum of Norwalk, Wis., and Lois (Fritz) Gordon of Dayton, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Arlys Wesoloski of Milwaukee, Wis.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Clara; her husband, Lyle; a son, Robert; a granddaughter, Wendy Maum Goodwin; brothers and sisters, Louis Thom, Dorothy Martin, Marian Tracy, Rita Pocius, Daisy (Imelda) Mehlis, Gertrude Senz, Joseph Thom, Leone Dwyer and John Thom. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held (today)Thursday, July 1, 2010, 10:30 a.m. at the St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tomah. The Very Rev. Steven J. Kachel will officiate. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Tomah. Family and friends are invited for visitation Wednesday, June 30, 2010, 4 until 7 p.m. with a 4 p.m. rosary at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. Family and friends are also invited for visitation Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic School Boiler Fund."
