His sponsors were August Pergande (believed to be August Friedrich Wilhelm Pergande, his first cousin once removed), Herman Gerke (a friend of his parents) and Maria Albrecht (believed to be Maria Gnewikow Albrecht, no relation). (Gary Griggs has Philip's confirmation certificate as well as a prayer book published in 1907 that was probably given to him at his Confirmation. Both are written in German.) He appeared in the census in 1930 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.143 His household was at 317 Central Street and his occupation was "Auto Repairman, Public Garage." They were renting the home, and his wife's sister Ethel was living with them. Phillip appeared in the census in 1940 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.167 His occupation was "Automobile Mechanic, Ford Garage." According to the Census, his total wages in 1939 were $1,300. Pergande, 77, died Friday, July 14, 1972, in a hospital after a long illness. Mr. Pergande was born in Wilton and lived in Sparta since 1932. He was employed as a mechanic at the Ford Garage for 38 years until his retirement several years ago.

Surviving is his wife, the former Blanche Barden, whom he married in 1920. The funeral was at 2 today (Monday) at the Robert Page Funeral Home, Sparta." Phillip was buried on 17 July 1972 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.54,222 in the Mount Hope Cemetery.

Phillip Theophil PERGANDE and Blanche Mildred BARDEN were married on 13 June 1920 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.54,168,340,341 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Blanche Mildred BARDEN, daughter of Herbert Henry BARDEN and Esther Jane HILES, was born on 10 October 1896 in Warrens, Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.54,222,342,343 She appeared in a school play called "Spinster's Convention" at the Old Towne Hall Theater on Main Street in Warrens, WI, in 1910.

(The theater opened in 1902 as the George Edgerton Post for the Grand Army of the Republic. It housed the Modern Woodman and The Royal Neighbors, graduated two Township of Lincoln High School classes and many Eighth Grade classes, and saw many Memorial Day services.

The stage was used for Vaudeville, plays, and programs, and everyone that ever performed has signed their names on the walls behind the stage. The floor also saw many basketball games, square dances, roller skating, Halloween and Christmas parties, musicals, silent movies, talent shows, wedding dances, was used as a school gym, and was the site of tap and ballet and tumbling classes.) The Rev. Margaret Shepherd will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Sparta. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday after 4 P.M. and on Saturday until the services.

She died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1985, in Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta. She was born on Oct. 10, 1896, in Monroe County, to Herbert and Esther (Hiles) Barden. She married Phillip Pergande on June 13, 1920. They lived most of their married lives in Sparta. He died July 14, 1972.

For the past two years she was a resident of the Morrow Memorial Home. Survivors are a sister, Ethel Clute of La Crosse; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
