"Vernie" WINCHEL, daughter of Arthur Henry WINCHEL and Susie M. SCHULTZ, was born on 23 February 1933 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.152,694 She graduated in 1951 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.694,763 from Tomah High School. She died on 30 August 2021 at the age of 88 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.694 Obituary Notes: "Vernageane 'Vernie' E. Vandervort, age 88, of Tomah, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 30, 2021 at the Serenity House in Tomah. She was born January 23, 1933, to Arthur and Susie (Schultz) Winchel in Tomah, Wisconsin. She attended St. Mary’s School for eight years and graduated from Tomah High School in 1951. After graduating from La Crosse Beauty School and worked as a beautician for 64 years.

On April 14th, 1956, she was united in marriage to Verlyn (Van) Vandervort, son of Frank and Alma (Kuehl) Vandervort. They had three children: David, Dilynn, and Dale.

She ushered at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was an active member of St. Bernadette Guild. Over the years she was involved in bowling, Tomah Saddle Club, High School Rodeo, Tomah Hospital Auxiliary, Red Hat and card clubs, and the Tomah Area Cancer Support, where she sponsored a team called the “V Squad.”

An important part of her life was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Christmas was a special time when they all go together at her home on Christmas Eve and played games. Her motto was, “If you can have fun without hurting anyone else’s feelings, ‘Go for it!!’”

She is survived by her children, Dilynn (Gary) Middleton and Dale (Melissa) Vandervort; grandchildren, Tiffany (Eric) Hall and their children, Karli, Klara and Konnor, Trent (Ashley) Vandervort and their children, Ava and Bentley, Koral (David Reeher) Bailey and their children, Cylis, Simon, Kenzie, Zane and Infinity, Jaden (Emilee) Bailey and their children, Owen and Aria, Ashlin (Joe) Mootz and their daughter, Oaklyn, Jessica (Brady) Berendes and their daughter, Blakley, Hailey Vandervort, and Carter Vandervort; daughter-in-law, Cindy Vandervort, and her children, Mandy (Brad) Musta and their daughter, Mallory, Rhonda (Viet) Vandong, and Jamie (Nate) Weyh, and their daughter, Zoeey.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her son, David; her siblings, Lavern Winchel, Lewis Winchel, and Ermie Steinmetz-Baldwin; her sister-in-law, June Winchel; and her brother-in-law, Leonard Steinmetz.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 3, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at the Queen of the Apostles Parish in Tomah. Father Samuel McCarty will officiate. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Tomah. Family and friends are invited for visitation on Thursday, September 2, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a rosary beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. Visitation will also be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Queen of the Apostles School Guardian Angel Fund or Tomah Area Cancer Support.
