Fourth Generation

45. Friedrich Wilhelm August PERGANDE Sr.10 was born on 26 June 1854 in Alt Damerow, Kreis Saatzig, Regierungsbezirk Stettin, Pommern (Pomerania) Province, Preussen (Prussia).9,10,12,58,84,163,252,253,254,255 August's mother was not married when he was born. His last name was always Pergande, the same as his mother's maiden name. She and his stepfather, Johann Brandenburg, brought August and the couple's four children to the U.S. The couple later had other children. On his Marriage Registration record, his father is listed as "John Brandenburg."

Barbara Schmaling (a descendant) heard the following explanation of his birth: Family legend says that when the Pergande women were on the docks of Ireland preparing to board the ship, they found an abandoned baby. Hiding the baby under their aprons, they boarded the ship. Several days later, Gustina pretended to give birth to the baby, August. That was a myth, because his birth is recorded in the Alt Damerow Parish Register Transcripts as illegitimate (no father's name is listed).

On his gravestone, his name is listed as "August W. F." but the Alt Damerow, Germany, birth and baptism records list his name as "Friedrich Wilhelm August." His baptism record is not dated, but it lists his age as 9 months. The church records of his death list his age at death as 51 years, 8 months and 6 days; that would indicate a date of birth of 26 June 1854, which is the date listed in the Alt Damerow Parish Register Transcripts. An article in the Monroe County Heritage Book lists it as 26 January 1854; that is incorrect. He was baptized on 9 July 1854 in Alt Damerow, Kreis Saatzig, Regierungsbezirk Stettin, Pommern (Pomerania) Province, Preussen (Prussia).4,19,163 His name is listed as "Friedrich Wilhelm August" in the Alt Damerow record of his baptism, although he used the name "August Friedrich Wilhelm."

The section of the record where his birth father's name would normally be listed is blank, so the name of his father is not known.

His sponsors were Friedrich Giese, Friedrich Minning, and Sophia Giese--all of Alt Damerow. He emigrated on 14 June 1870 from Alt Damerow, Kreis Saatzig, Regierungsbezirk Stettin, Pommern (Pomerania) Province, Preussen (Prussia).57,60,253 (He and his parents emigrated on the ship "Helene" from the port of Bremerhaven, and arrived in New York City.)

(He could not be located in the 1880 Census in Wisconsin; he was not living with his parents.) Between 1883 and 1906 Friedrich was a farmer in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.12 His Pergande farm has been in the family for more than 100 years, and is now owned by one of his sons, Myron Pergande. He was Lutheran about 1883 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.55,72 He is listed as number 76 of the first 100 members in the church records and was listed on the Memberbership Roster in 1900. He appeared in the census in 1895 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.66 His household consisted of 6 males and 1 female, of which 4 were born in the United States and 3 in Germany. His surname was spelled "Perganda" and the names of the individual members of his family were not listed.

The census indicated that he was listed as a member of the Militia. Friedrich appeared in the census in 1900 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.38 He appeared in the census in 1905 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.166 He died on 2 March 1906 at the age of 51 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.58,67,101,127,254,255,256 Friedrich was buried on 5 March 1906 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.58,67,101,254,255,256 in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. He has Ancestral File Number LRGY-ZSY.
