Obituary Notes: "Gaylord M. Gerke, age 85, of Camp Douglas, died on Friday Dec. 26, 2008, at the Tomah Veterans Medical Center. He was the son of Gilbert and Saphronia (Johnson) Gerke and was born on June 5, 1923, in Sparta, WI. Gaylord grew up in the Camp Douglas area. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Marshall Islands Campaign. He remained in the service until 1946. Gaylord has worked for the Clifton Creamery and the Hustler Creamery, Sunbeam Corporation in Chicago for several years and for A.O. Smith in Elkhorn for several years, and the rest of his life as a self employed building carpenter. Gaylord was a member of the Camp Douglas American Legion Post 133 for over 50 years. On occasion he would like to visit the casino for awhile.

He is survived by his brothers, Ed Gerke of Mather and Donald Gerke of Harvard, IL; five sisters, Jean Kenny of Oxford, Charlene (Otto) Miller of Mather, Rosemary Anderson of Chisholm, MN, Bonnie (Maurice) McClaskey of Rockford, IL, and Joyce (Charles) Bell of Comer, GA, and a very special companion of 61 years, Lucille Kearney of Camp Douglas and her family Rita and Art Barth of Camp Douglas, Marlene and Jim Loehr of Camp Douglas, Claude and Donna Kearney of Adams, and a “special grandpa” to three grandchildren, Kevin and Terese Barth, Lee and Jamie Jaromin and Steve and Deb Bogucki, and eight great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Delbert and David, and by two brothers-in-law, Donald Kenny and Kenneth Anderson.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday Dec. 31, at 10 a.m. at the Hare Funeral Home in New Lisbon with Rev. Jeff Ruetten presiding. Burial with military honors provided by Camp Douglas American Legion Post 133 were in the Camp Douglas Village Cemetery. Relatives and friends called at the Hare Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. time of service."
