It was in the part of West Prussia that fell to Poland after World War I in 1920. Its capital was Berent. From 1939 to 1945, the district was re-established in German-occupied Poland as part of the newly established Reichsgau Danzig-West Prussia. Today the territory of the district is located in the Polish Pomeranian Voivodeship. He emigrated on 27 June 1870 from Bremen, Neidersachsen (Lower Saxony) Province, Preussen (Prussia).5,7,8 According to the 1920 Census, he emigrated in 1870 and became a Naturalized U.S. Citizen in 1903. According to the Census record, he owned his own home, he was able to read and write, and his household did not own a radio. Also living in his household was Raymond Staltz, age 14, born in Wisconsin and described as his "Son." Raymond's parents were born in Wisconsin, so his birth parents would not have been Joseph and Julia. His identity is unknown and he may have been adopted. He died on 17 March 1937 at the age of 83 in Stockton Township, Portage County, WI.3 Joe was buried on 20 March 1937 in Fancher, Portage County, WI.3,16 in the Saint Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery. Saint Mary's church is beautifully designed like the old Polish Cathedrals. The fairly large cemetery has about 1,248 graves and is maintained by the Parish. Its location is midway between Stevens Point and Amherst, Wisconsin on State Hwy 10. From Hwy 10, turn on Smokey Road going south to the intersection with Lake Thomas Road. Turn east and in about ¼ mile you will see the church with the cemetery in the back. Joseph's gravestone is not listed in the cemetery's Find a Grave Website. According to the 1920 Census, her parents were born in "Poland," which was actually Prussia in the 1800's. She emigrated in 1886 from Preussen (Prussia).7,8 She appeared in the census in 1900 in Stockton Township, Portage County, WI.7 Julia appeared in the census in 1905 in Stockton Township, Portage County, WI.15 She appeared in the census in 1910 in Stockton Township, Portage County, WI.8 She appeared in the census in 1920 in Stockton Township, Portage County, WI.12 She was listed as "Julia." According to the Census, she emigrated in 1887 and became a Naturalized U.S. Citizen in 1903. Julia died on 23 September 1925 at the age of 53.9 She was buried in Fancher, Portage County, WI.9 in the Saint Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery.
