2. Ira R. ROOT (*) was born on 14 July 1782 in Springfield Township, Otsego County, NY.^{3,11,49,50,54,55,56} (His gravestone and the cemetery records list his birthdate as 14 July 1782. Other records list his birth year as 1791.) He appeared in the census in 1800 in Springfield Township, Otsego County, NY.⁷ He appeared in the census in 1810 in Springfield Township, Otsego County, NY.²⁴ He was living with his parents and their family. Ira served in the military in 1814 in New York.¹ He was drafted and served two months in the War of 1812 against Great Britain. He served in Capt. Peleg Arnold's Co. of the New York Militia. He was honorably discharged on 14 November 1814. He appeared in the census in 1820 in Springfield Township, Otsego County, NY.⁴⁵ His household consisted of one male, age 0-10 (his son Thomas Arthur); one male, age 26-45 (Ira); one female, age 1-10 (his daughter Olivia); and one female, age 16-26 (his wife Sarah). Olivia's twin daughter, Olive, was not listed. He appeared in the census in 1830 in Springfield Township, Otsego County, NY.⁴¹ His household consisted of 1 male, age 0-5 (son Elliott, age 4); 1 male, age 5-10 (son William, 5); 1 male, age 10-15 (son Thomas Arthur, 12); 1 male, age 30-40 (Ira, 39); 1 female, age 0-5 (daughter, Amanda, 2); 2 females, age 5-10 (daughters Orril, 8, and Mary, 10); 1 female, 10-15 (twin daughter Olivia (or Olive), 14); and 1 female, age 30-40 (wife Sarah, 34). It is not known why their other twin daughter Olive (or Olivia), 14, was not listed.

He and his family moved from Springfield Township to Otto Township, NY, sometime in the 1830's. Ira appeared in the census in 1840 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁵⁷ His household consisted of 1 male, age 0-5 (son Charles, age 3); 2 males, age 5-10 (sons Ephraim, 6, and Albert, 9); 1 male, age 10-15 (son Elliott, 14); 1 male, age 15-20 (son William, 15); 1 male, age 20-30 (son Thomas Arthur, 22); 1 male, age 30-40 (unknown); 1 male, age 40-50 (Ira, 49); 1 female, age 10-15 (daughter, Amanda, 12); 2 females, age 15-20 (daughters Orril, 18, and Mary, 20); 2 females, 20-30 (daughter Olivia, 24, and Olive, 24); and 1 female, age 40-50 (wife Sarah, 44). It is possible that the unknown male, age 30-40, may have been his youngest brother Charles (age 33). He appeared in the census in 1850 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁵⁸ His household consisted of Ira, age 58, born NY; Sarah, age 53, born VT; and their children "Manley" (Amanda), 21; Ephraim, 16; and Charles, 13, all born in NY. He appeared in the census in 1855 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁵⁹ His birthplace was listed as "Otsego" county and his occupation was "Farmer." Ira appeared in the census in 1860 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.^60,61 His household consisted of Ira, age 68, farmer, born NY; Sarah, age 63, born VT; Charles A., age 23, born NY; Armetta, age 19, domestic, born NY; and Allice, age 5, born NY.

Armetta was the wife of their son Charles. The Census form indicates that they were both married within the prior year. Allice appears to have been too old to be their daughter, but she might have been, or she may have been adopted. She was also listed with Charles and Armetta in the 1870 Census. He appeared in the census in 1865 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁶² His occupation was "Farmer." He appeared in the census in 1870 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁶¹ Ira appeared in the census in 1875 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁶³ His occupation was "Farmer." He died on 25 April 1876 at the age of 93 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.^3,11,49,50 He had his estate probated on 3 August 1876 in Cattaraugus County, NY.⁴² Ira has Ancestral File Number K8MR-VVJ.³⁴
He was buried in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁵⁶ in the North Otto Cemetery.

Ira R. ROOT (*) and Sarah MALLORY (*) were married on 20 August 1815 in Springfield Center, Springfield Township, Otsego County, NY.^3,49,64,65 (The Root Family Bible indicates that they may have married in Litchfield, Litchfield County, CT.)

(According to the 1865 New York State Census, they were the parents of 11 children.) Sarah MALLORY (*)⁶⁵ was born on 10 October 1796 in Chautauqua County, NY.^{3,36,54,55,56,58,65,66,67,68,69} (The cemetery records list her birth year as 1800. That is believed to be incorrect.)

Some family records list her surname as Morse. The cemetery records list it as Mallory. The Rosalie Dieteman Family Tree on Ancestry.com lists it as Skinner. It is believed to have been Skinner.

(The 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census' listed her birth place as Vermont, as did the 1880 Census for her son Charles and the 1855 and 1865 New York State Census'. The 1880 Census listed the birth place of both of her parents as Vermont.

According to the 1900 Census of her son, Ephraim, she was born in New York State; in addition, the Richard Ripley research of the Root Family lists her birthplace as Chautauqua, Chautauqua County, NY.) She appeared in the census in 1820 in Springfield Center, Springfield Township, Otsego County, NY.⁴⁵ She appeared in the census in 1830 in Springfield Center, Springfield Township, Otsego County, NY.⁴¹ Sarah appeared in the census in 1840 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁵⁷ She appeared in the census in 1850 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁴⁷ She appeared in the census in 1855 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁵⁹ Sarah appeared in the census in 1860 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁶⁰ She appeared in the census in 1865 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁶² She appeared in the census in 1870 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁶¹ Sarah appeared in the census in 1875 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁶³ She appeared in the census in 1880 in Otto Township, Cattaraugus County, NY.⁶⁷ She was living by herself, next door to the household of her son Charles and his family.
