Miss Jane Root was born Jan. 1st, 1815, in the state of New York. June 19, 1831, she was married to Mr. Seth Calkins, who preceded her to the long home Mar. 6th, 1890. Her father was an officer on a lake vessel during the War of 1812. She had one brother who lost his life in the Mexican War, and another brother who lost his life in the Rebellion of Canada by being burned in a fortified windmill. Mrs. Calkins was an admirable character. She was a member of the Methodist church a great many years and a devout Christian. She has gone to her reward. The funeral was conducted from the M.E. Church by the pastor, C. E. Butters, Tuesday morning, Feb. 26th. The remains were laid to rest beside her husband in the Tomah Cemetery."
