Obituary Notes: "Loraine Rae Monte, 69, formerly of Tomah, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at her home. Loraine was born in Tomah March 28, 1943, to George and Irene (Zellmer) Schmieder. She graduated from Tomah Senior High School in 1961. She spent some years living in La Crosse, Fosston, Minn., St. Paul, Minn., Chicago and also in Panama.

In Loraine’s younger years she enjoyed being a race car driver at the Tomah/Sparta Speedway. She was a member of the Eastern Star when she lived in Wausau. Loraine had many different jobs during her life but really enjoyed the time she worked at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in the cafeteria. Meeting new people every day and the interaction with the hospital staff was a very fulfilling part of her life. Loraine was known for her outgoing personality and her exceptional wit. You were a stranger only once to Loraine.

Loraine enjoyed cooking and baking for family get-togethers. Her kitchen talents were shared with her grandchildren as often as possible. Her hobbies were her plants and gardening. Other favorite past times were watching the Green Bay Packers and playing cards and dice games with her friends and family, especially Scrabble.

Loraine is survived by four children, Rae Ellen (Walter Jr.) Gnewikow of La Crosse, Lori (Sonny) Riner of Sparta, William (Lori) Merritt of Tucson, Ariz., and George (Jean) Merritt of Nekoosa; grandchildren Neil Merritt of Onalaska, Wayne (Maria) Maulsby of Camp Douglas, Dennis Riner of North Carolina, Tucker Riner of Sparta, Kelli (Chris) Henke of Sparta, T.J. (Kyra) Gilson of La Crosse and Caleb, Brett, Aliyah, Helen and Aaron Merritt of Nekoosa; great-grandchildren Hayden, Hayley, Maddox, Loren, Connor, Kayleigh, Carter and Angelique; sister Ellen Dupee of Roseburg, Ore.; and brother, Larry Schmieder of Tomah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Irene Schmieder; brother Ronald Schmieder; brother-in-law Douglas Dupee; nieces Kim Dupee, Kori Holborrow, and Stacy Schmieder; and nephew Charlie Schmieder.

A celebration of life picnic will be held at Evans-Bosshard Park Pavilion in Sparta Thursday, June 14, 2012, from 4-8 p.m. All friends and family are invited to come and share memories of Loraine. A private family interment will be held at a later date."
