198. Joyce SOWLE was born on 13 December 1919 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁶ She died on 23 March 2006 at the age of 86 in Oregon, Dane County, WI.¹⁶

Obituary Notes: "Joyce (Sowle) Krueger, age 86, of Madison, WI, and formerly of Tomah, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2006, at the Sienna Crest Assisted Living Home in Oregon, WI. She was born on Dec. 13, 1919, to Kyle and Frieda (Stoiber) Sowle in Tomah.

She was united in marriage to Vernon H. (Krug) Krueger on June 10, 1948, and enjoyed 49 years of marriage until Krug’s death on Oct. 11, 1997. Joyce spent over 32 years as a secretary at the VA Hospital in Tomah, and retired from service in 1978. In 1996, they moved to Madison to be closer to family. She was a member of the Bethany Methodist Church in Madison.

Joyce was an eternal optimist, and always focused on the possibilities instead of the setbacks. Despite losing her best friend and her eyesight during the last decade of her life, she remained confident and strong. She always had a smile and a hug to share, and was a source of love and wisdom for her family and friends until her last day. Throughout life she enjoyed many, many pastimes, including travel around the United States and Canada, bowling, knitting, and more recently listening to hundreds of books on tape, crossword puzzles and trivia. She was a relentless Brewers fan who almost never missed listening to a game on the radio. She had recently expressed excitement and hope for the beginning of the 2006 season.

She is survived by her children, Karyl (Norbert) Affeldt of Madison and Scott (Barbara) Krueger of Madison; four grandchildren, Jay (Sarah) Affeldt, Jennifer Affeldt, James Krueger and Kristin Krueger; twin great-grandchildren, Henry and Bryn Affeldt; a brother, Dayton (Bev) Sowle of Tomah; sisters, Karyl Smythe of Portage and Jean (Ken) Brost of Madison; sister-in-law, Bev Sowle of Tomah; sister-in-law Lucy Krueger of Leon, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kyle and Frieda; her husband, Krug; a sister, Jewell Sowle; a brother, Arthur Sowle; brother-in-law W.A. Smythe, brother-in-law Harold Krueger, brother-in-law Lloyd Krueger and nephews Todd and Torin Sowle and Terry Sowle.

The family would also like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to the compassionate staff and loving residents of Sienna Crest, who have been like family to her for the past eight years.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 1, at 11 a.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Tomah. Family and friends are invited for visitation on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home."

Joyce SOWLE and Vernon Howard "Krug" KRUEGER were married on 10 June 1948.¹⁶ Vernon Howard "Krug" KRUEGER was born on 24 September 1922 in Monroe County, WI.¹⁷ He died on 11 October 1997 at the age of 75.¹⁴
