Obituary Notes: "John E. Hubert, 85, of Tomah died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Serenity House in Tomah. He was born Sept. 18, 1927, to Herman and Martha (Mistele) Hubert at their home in the town of Wilton. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School. He was the little man with the “Big” voice. He was a 1946 graduate of Tomah Senior High School.

He was united in marriage to Beverly Burnstad. He was united in marriage on June 6, 1970 to Laura Pahl at Kenosha. John was a U.S. Marine veteran at the end of World War II, and served during the Korean War. For 19 years, he owned and operated Hub Painting in Madison. He moved back to Tomah in 1989. He was the first president of the Tomah VA Union. He was a member for 50 plus years and a past commander of the Grassman-Sowle-Larsen-Senz American Legion Post #201 in Tomah when they built their new building on Wisconsin Avenue.

John was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He made several fishing trips to Canada, and several hunting trips out West. He enjoyed playing euchre with family and friends. He was a friend to many Amish families. He was known as the “king of the one liner” and always enjoyed visiting with people. He never met a stranger. His family was most important to him and his grandchildren will always remember fishing in his little pond and rides on grandpa’s tractor. He was a devoted husband, and a loving dad, grandpa, great grandpa and brother.
He is survived by his wife, Laura, of Tomah; seven children, Mary Jo (Mel) Schroeder of Mount Horeb, Patricia (Dewey) Wagner of Verona, Lynn Adrian of Madison, Michael (Debra) Hubert of Madison, Bruce (Debra) Pahl of New Glarus, ,Debra Kohl of Appleton and David (Amy) Pahl of DeForest; 13 grandchildren, Todd (Linda) Schroeder, Nikki (Jeff) Helm, Kari (Brad) Carden, Brooke (Gary) Blaser, Mya (Jim) Rognstad, Justin (Amy) Hubert, Cody (Angela) Wagner, Keith Adrian, Ben (Nicole) Pahl, Chris Pahl, Nathan (Sara) Kohl, Amanda (her fiancé Matt Elliott) Kohl, and Jared Pahl; 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bernard (Elda), Lawrence (Barbara), James (Janyne); four sisters, Mary Thompson, Sister Gabrielle Hubert, OP, Cecilia Klapproth, and Elizabeth Rottman; two sisters-in-law, Nellie Aylesworth and Thelma Harrisen; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Raymond, Robert and Gerald; two infant sisters; and five brothers-in-law.
Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 310 W. Elizabeth Street, Tomah. Pastor David Dahl will officiate. Military honors by Grassman-Sowle-Larsen-Senz American Legion Post #201 will be held at Mount Vernon Cemetery, in the Town of Tomah."
