3. George Washington SUTHERLAND was born in 1804 in Kinderhook, Columbia County, NY.^{1,2,3,9,10,11} (One source listed his birth year as 1794. The 1850 Census listed his age as 46, the 1870 as 65 and the 1880 as 75; that would indicate a birth year of about 1804.)

From Iris Sandvick's Research: "The Sutherlands are descendants of 'Angus Sutherland' of Ross Shire, Scotland, 'Truste to Ardross,' the date of whose birth is not known, but who was an old man in 1745. He was taken prisoner by the Earl of Cromarty in his expedition in to Sutherlandshire some time in the 18th century.

He had two sons--Kenneth and Angus. This line is also married to Eaton. There is a 'Coat of Arms,' the Motto of which is 'SANS PEUR.' The family is descended from King Robert I of Scotland, and is one of the most ancient in Britain.

The different creations have been: Scottish Earldom, 1228. -- Baronet of Nova Scotia, Jan. 2, 1620. -- Baron, March 16, 1702-3. -- Earl, July 8, 1746. -- Marquess, March 1, 1786. -- Duke, January 28, 1833. Shirley Svedin a Sutherland descendent, lives in Dakota, had pictures of Briggs and Melvurna."

He appeared in the census in 1820 in Hillsdale Township, Columbia County, NY.⁸ He appeared in the census in 1830 in Henderson Township, Jefferson County, NY.¹² His surname was spelled "Southerland" and his household consisted of 2 males, age under 5 (Briggs and George); 1 male, age 20-30 (George); 1 female, age under 5 (Betsy Ann); and 1 female, age 20-30 (Samantha).

(His family could not be located in New York, Ohio or any other state in the 1840 Census. Based on the ages of his children, the family should have been living in Franklin or Trumbull County, OH.) George appeared in the census in 1850 in Greene, Trumbull County, OH.¹¹

(His family could not be located in the 1860 Census.) He appeared in the census in 1870 in Kickapoo Township, Vernon County, WI.⁹ He appeared in the census in 1880 in Kickapoo Township, Vernon County, WI.¹⁰ George died on 18 March 1893 at the age of 89 in Kickapoo Township, Vernon County, WI.²

George Washington SUTHERLAND and Samantha "Sarah" EATON were married on 9 April 1826 in Henderson Township, Jefferson County, NY.² Samantha "Sarah" EATON, daughter of (Unknown) EATON and Rachel UNKNOWN (EATON), was born on 17 February 1805 in New York.² She appeared in the census in 1830 in Henderson Township, Jefferson County, NY.¹² She appeared in the census in 1850 in Greene, Trumbull County, OH.¹¹ Sarah appeared in the census in 1870 in Kickapoo Township, Vernon County, WI.⁹
