The 1800 Census did contain the household of a George Sutherland with the following members: 1 male, age 10-15; 2 males, age 16-25; 1 male, age >45; 1 female, age 10-15; 1 female, age 16-25; 1 female, age 26-44; and 1 female, age >45. His relationship to Elijah is not known.)

Elijah appeared in the census in 1840 in Cazenovia, Madison County, NY.⁵ His surname was spelled "Southerland" and his household consisted of 1 male, age 50-60 (Elijah) and 1 female, age 50-60 (Mary).
