The marriage, performed in St. Mary's Catholic Church by the Rev. Father Thomas J. Fallen, was kept secret from all but their closest intimates by the couple. The State capital's new first lady, successor to the consorts of first citizens since colonial times, is the daughter of Mrs. Anna Svitak and the late Florian Svitak, of Baltimore. She is the sister of Mrs. Emory C. Rice, of Baltimore.

Mayor Haley is an Annapolis lawyer, a native of Massachusetts. He was graduated from the University of Maryland and the University of Virginia. He has been active in fraternal, civic and political life in the State capital since he started practice. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Haley, of Annapolis.

Mayor Haley assumed office in January, succeeding Louis N. Phipps, who entered the State Senate. He was previously city attorney and a member of the Board of Aldermen. Haley is the youngest Mayor of Annapolis in recent history.
