Before 1930 he was an electrical engineer in Schenectady, Schenectady County, NY.^105,263 He worked for General Electric Corporation. He appeared in the census in 1930 in Schenectady, Schenectady County, NY.²⁶³ He was a "Roomer" in the household of Clara Berning and her family. Al died on 21 September 1961 at the age of 56 in Roanoke, Roanoke County, VA.^42,102 of lung cancer.

Alva Lafayette "Al" SWEET and Marion Brandhorst BERNING were married on 15 October 1932.^42,105,264 Marion Brandhorst BERNING, daughter of Will BERNING and Clara BRANDHORST, was born on 5 August 1911.²⁶⁴
