He appeared in the census in 1850 in Koshkonong, Jefferson County, WI.⁵² He, his wife Nancy, and their children Helen and Justin were living in the household of John Gill (age 36, born New York, occupation "Farmer") and his wife, Jane (age 31, born New York). No relationships are noted on the census form. About 1855 he was a farmer in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.⁵³ William appeared in the census in 1860 in Greenfield Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁶ (His surname was spelled as "Tafft.") He appeared in the census in 1870 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁸ He appeared in the census in 1880 in La Grange Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁹ He and his wife were living with their son Charles and his family. William died on 31 January 1891 at the age of 72 in La Grange Township, Monroe County, WI.^51,54
