First Generation

1. Joseph TAUBER I was born on 5 May 1842 in Bohemia (Czech Republic).1,2,3,4,5,6 His passport says he came from Kronland, Bohemia. (This is a map of Bohemia.)

Family legend has it that the teacher of their children could not pronounce "Tauber" so the spelling was changed to "Tiber." It was spelled that way in the 1870 Census.

A church window at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Indian Creek lists the spelling as "Tieber."

. He emigrated in 1867 from Bohemia (Czech Republic).2,3 He and his wife sailed on the ship "Baltic" from the port of Hamburg (possibly Bremen), Germany, in 1867. Leila Gabower Tiber has their passport, which is dated 15 Feb 1867.

.

After 1867 he was a farmer in Oakdale, Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.1,2 Joseph appeared in the census in 1870 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.4 His household consisted of Joseph, Ezupha, Mary, Matilda and Joseph. (The Census record says that he, Ezupha and Mary were born in Bohemia.) He appeared in the census in 1875 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.7 His household consisted of 3 males and 3 females. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.1 Joseph died on 18 April 1884 at the age of 41.3,5 He was buried after 18 April 1884 in Indian Creek, Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.3,8 in the St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery.

Joseph TAUBER I and Josepha "Josephine" ZIMPRICH were married on 20 March 1872 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.3,4,9,10 Johanna had two children of her own, born in Bohemia, before she and Joseph Tauber married. Even though they were apparently not married until 1872, they were listed in the same household in the 1870 Census.

(Her name is listed as "Josefa Zimprick" in the Monroe County Early Marriage Registration Index.)

. Josepha "Josephine" ZIMPRICH, daughter of Joseph ZIMPRICH and Anna HUBEL, was born on 16 January 1832 in Horni Libchavy, Bohemia (Czech Republic).1,2,3,4,11,12,13,14 She is believed to not have been married when her first two children were born. Here is one possible explanation: "Grandmother Amelia Tiber told Margaret (Tiber) McCaskey that Josepha worked for a titled family and got involved with their dashing young son.  She had to leave when she became pregnant with John Zimprich.  The father of John did not claim him as a son.

Joseph Tauber was married to Josepha’s niece, who died.  Josepha went to keep house for him and became his common law wife.  She was 10 years older than Joseph.  They believed that they could not marry because they were related."

(Her name is listed as "Arzepha" in the 1870 Census and as "Josephine" in 1880, 1900 and 1910. In some family records, she is listed as "Johanna.")

(Her birthplace is listed as Oberlichwe, Landskron, Bohemia-Austria on FamilySearch.org. The 1900 and 1910 Census' list her birth place as Germany. Libchavy (German: Lichwe) is a municipality in the Ústí nad Orlicí District in the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic. It lies approximately 4 kilometres (2 mi) north of Ústí nad Orlicí, 45 km (28 mi) east of Pardubice, and 142 km (88 mi) east of Prague. Libchavy consists of two villages; Dolní Libchavy and Horní Libchavy.) She emigrated in 1867 from Bohemia (Czech Republic).3,6,11 She was listed on the ship's manifest as "Josefa Ciniprich." The ship was the Baltic.

Her passport is dated 18 February 1867.

. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.4 (Her name appears to be spelled "Arzepha.") Josephine appeared in the census in 1875 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.7 She appeared in the census in 1880 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.1 (She was listed as "Josephine" and her age was listed as 48.) The census indicates that she was the mother of 5 children, of whom 4 were still living. Other family information indicates that she had 6 children, but that is believed to be incorrect.

. She appeared in the census in 1910 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.12 She was living with her son Joe and his family.

The census record indicates that she was not able to speak English, and spoke only German.
