James, his wife Martha Elizabeth, daughter Kara Sue and adopted son Danny Rae were killed i in the Alton-Bunker Hill Tornado of March 19, 1948. Their daughter Myra was raised by Martha V roman's sister. A total of 33 people were killed in this tornado.

Martha Elizabeth UNKNOWN (VROMAN) was born on 11 November 1910. She died on 19 March 1948 at the age of 37 in Alton, Madison County, IL.
