Courtland VROMAN was born about 1843 in Pennsylvania.35,55 He appeared in the census in 1850 in Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County, WI.53 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County, WI.36 His occupation was listed as "carriage maker." Courtland served in the military about 1861.56 He served in "A" Company of the 16th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private.
"A" Company was nicknamed the "Waushara and Green Lake County Rangers." The regiment was mustered into service on November 20, 1861 at Camp Randall, Wisconsin, and was commanded by Colonel Benjamin Allen. The Company participated in the Battle of Shiloh, especially in the Hornet's Nest and Bloody Pond; the Vicksburg Campaign; the Battle of Corinth; and Sherman's March to the Sea.

The Sixteenth had the longest casualty list--it lost more than a fourth of its men in the first great battle in the western theater of war, known as Shiloh in the North and Pittsburg Landing in the South. The regiment later became part of Sherman's Army and the XVII Corps and participated in battles at Kennesaw Mountains, Bald Hill and the siege of Atlanta. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Des Moines, Jackson County, MN.55 His household consisted of Courtland, age 37, born PA, occupation "Blacksmith;" his wife, Victoria, age 24, born OH; and their children Mary, age 12, born MN, and Barney, age 2, born MN.

Courtland VROMAN and Victoria UNKNOWN (VROMAN) were married.55 Victoria UNKNOWN (VROMAN) was born about 1856 in Ohio.55 She appeared in the census in 1880 in Des Moines, Jackson County, MN.55
