4. Edward James "Ed" WILLIAMS was born on 12 April 1857 in Illinois.^1,15 (The Oak Grove Cemetery records list his birth year as 1855. The Sueanne Tuomi research indicates that he was born on 12 April 1857.)

The 1880 Wellington Township Census for him listed his birth place, as well as that of his parents, as Ohio. His birth place is believed to have been Wisconsin, although the Tuomi research indicates that it was "most probably Illinois."

He appeared in the census in 1860 in Byron, Ogle County, IL.² He appeared in the census in 1870 in Elkhorn, Walworth County, WI.¹² Ed appeared in the census in 1880 in Wellington Township, Monroe County, WI.^4,16 He was living with his wife "Frances" and their son, "George H" and his occupation was "Laborer." His household was next to that of Emery and Mary Urich; it is believed that they were related, but the relationship is not known.

(The 1895 Census for the city of Sparta contained a Williams family, but no first name was listed for the husband. The family consisted of 4 males and 4 females. That could have been Edward's family, as his family would have consisted of the same mix at that time. The same census contained the household of James Williams in Leon Township, but that family consisted of 5 men and 2 women. The family mix would not have been the same as that of Edward's family.)

. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁷ His household was at 510 Williams Street and his occupation was "Day Laborer." He appeared in the census in 1905 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁸ His household was at 510 Williams Street and his occupation was "Day Laborer."

Ed appeared in the census in 1910 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^11,19,20 His household was on Benton Street in the 3rd Ward and his occupation was "Labor, Com. Laborer."

(He could not be located in the 1920 Census.)

. He died in 1926 at the age of 69 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^1,21 One of his granddaughters, Virginia Mae (Williams) Griggs, remembers him rocking her on his lap when she was 3 years old. She remembers that, when he was dying, he said that he wanted to hold her.

. He was buried in 1926 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^13,22 in the Oak Grove Cemetery. (He is buried in Section 1A, Block 2, Lot 13, which was purchased by Sarah Houghtaling Hall, one of his wife's sisters.)

Edward James "Ed" WILLIAMS and Frances HOUGHTALING were married on 18 December 1878 in Monroe County, WI.^{17,19,23,24,25,26,27} According to the 1900 Census, they had 7 children, of whom 6 were still alive; in the 1910 Census, they were listed as having had 8 children, of whom 7 were still living.

Frances HOUGHTALING, daughter of Henry HOUGHTALING and Lydia Ann CHUTE, was born in October 1859 in Wisconsin.^{17,18,19,25,26,28,29,30,31} (The cemetery records list her year of birth as 1861, but she was listed in the June 1860 Census as being 5 months old.)

(The 1905 census listed her birth place as New York. According to the 1910 Census, her parents were born in New York state.)

(An Ancestry.com source lists her surname spelling as "Houghtaling" and her birth date as Oct 1859; the Marriage Registration Index lists the spelling as "Houghtelling.")
