He appeared in the census in 1860 in Greenbush Township, Sheboygan County, WI.²⁰ He appeared in the census in 1870 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.^5,11 He was living with his father and step-mother and his occupation was "Farm Laborer."

(He was not listed in the 1880 Census of Lincoln Township, and it is not known where he lived.) Joe appeared in the census in 1900 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.⁴³ His household was at 1216 Hollister Avenue and his occupation was "Logger in Saw Mill." (His surname was listed as "William.") He appeared in the census in 1905 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.³⁵ His household was in the 3rd Ward and his occupation was "Laborer." He appeared in the census in April 1910 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.³⁸ His household was on Hollister Avenue in the 2nd Ward and his occupation was "None." He married Martha Jane McCurdy on November 24, 1884 in Monroe County, Wisconsin. He passed away on June 16, 1910.
