Sir John Attewode (evolved in later generations to Wood), Sr., Knight of the Shire, and his wife, Isabella de Mules, were born in England in 1404. Through their sons Christopher and John, Jr., they are the earliest-known ancestors of the many Wood family members that lived in Monroe County.

Another of their descendants, Deacon Simeon Wood III, and his wife, Mary Jane Pierce, were born in Massachusetts in about 1820 and settled in the Tomah area in 1858 and their five sons married into families such as Soule, Jennings, Crary and Gloede.
