Mahlon LaVerne KROENER30 was born on 20 September 1911 in West Salem, La Crosse County, WI.29,61,67 He appeared in the census in 1920 in West Salem, La Crosse County, WI.32 He appeared in the census in 1930 in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.61 His was a "Farm Laborer" in the household of Edward and Leone Giraud and his occupation was "Farm Laborer, General Farm." Mahlon appeared in the census in 1930 in Stoughton, Dane County, WI.33 (He was listed with his father and step-mother in Stoughton, but he was actually living and working in Adrian Township.)

. He died on 21 March 2004 at the age of 92 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, WI.29,68

Obituary Notes: "Mahlon L. Kroener, 92, of Sparta, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born on Sept. 20, 191, in West Salem, WI, to John A. and Ella (Ziegler) Kroener. He grew up in Stoughton, and Coles Valley, Monroe County. After school, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps, farmed in Bangor and Sparta, hauled milk, and drove school bus.

He married Frieda Niedfeldt on May 2, 1934, in Bangor at the Lutheran Parsonage. Together, they owned and operated Kroener's Grocery in Coles Valley for nearly 20 years. He enjoyed making and refinishing furniture for years after he retired. He played the banjo and was a member of Andy's Band in his earlier years, which is how he met his wife. He also enjoyed old cars in parades and waltzing to "old time" music. Mahlon was a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Sparta.

He is survived by his wife, Frieda of Sparta; six children, Betty (Lester) Amundson of Cashton, Virginia (Robert) Collies of Necedah, Darlene Kohner of La Crosse, Janice (James) Marenchin of Rapid City, SD, John (special friend, Sue) Kroener of Tomah, and Ronnie (Nancy) Kroener of Grapevine, TX; 28 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren; a step sister, Mildred (Frank) Gardner of Stoughton; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Elizabeth; and an infant great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Sparta, with Rev. Mark Wessel officiating. Burial will be in Mound Prairie Cemetery, Coles Valley."

Mahlon LaVerne KROENER and Frieda Sophia NIEDFELDT were married on 2 May 1934 in Bangor, La Crosse County, WI.31,68,69 Frieda Sophia NIEDFELDT, daughter of August NIEDFELDT and Dorothy EHLO, was born on 26 January 1918 in Wisconsin.70 She appeared in the census in 1930 in Bangor, La Crosse County, WI.70 She died on 2 October 2007 at the age of 89 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.68

Obituary Note: "Frieda S. Kroener, 89, of Sparta died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, at Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta. She was born on Jan. 26, 1918, to August and Dorthea (Ehlo) Niedfeldt. She grew up in the Bangor, Wis., and Sparta areas.

She married Mahlon LaVerne Kroener on May 2, 1934, in Bangor at the Lutheran parsonage. She met Mahlon at a house party where Mahlon was playing banjo in a band. They farmed. She was a member of the Coles Valley (Wis.) Homemaker Club, worked at a restaurant and owned and operated Kroener Grocery with Mahlon in Coles Valley for 20 years.

She is survived by her children, Betty (Lester) Amundson of Cashton, Wis., Darlene Kohner of La Crosse, Janice (James) Marenchin of Rapid City, S.D., John (fiancee, Barb) Kroener of Tomah, Wis., and Ronnie (Nancy) Kroener of Grapevine, Texas; 28 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Raymond Niedfeldt of Sparta, Lloyd (Gladys) Niedfeldt of Bangor, and Floyd (Francis) Niedfeldt of Janesville, Wis.; a half sister-in-law, Mildred (Frank) Gardner of Stoughton, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mahlon on March 21, 2004; her daughter, Virginia Collies; an infant great-grandchild; three sisters, Helen Hoyer, Margaret Isensee and Erna Knoll; and two brothers-in-law, Erwin Knoll and Robert Isensee.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sparta, with the Rev. Mark Wessel officiating. Burial will be in Mound Prairie Cemetery, Coles Valley."
