Fifth Generation

5. Michael Pauluszen VAN DER VOORT (+) was born on 18 November 1615 in Dermonde, Flanders, Belgium.10,11,12

From the research of Harry van der Voort: "One of the questions that remained open is the actual place of birth of Michiel Pualusz van der Voort / Michael Paulus Vandervoort.

When he married Maria Rappalje in 1640 in New Amsterdam he stated that he was from Dermont in Vlaanderen. Dermont is the local form for Dendermonde (city in the Belgium province Vlaams Brabant). The local parish records of Dendermonde do not list a birth of a Michiel / Michael as son of a Paul / Paulus van der Voort. So I started looking for his birth in the part of Vlaanderen named 'Land van Dendermonde' (Region of Dendermonde).

I found in Opwijk, a village south-east of Dendermonde, in index on the local parish registers of the churches in the 'Land van Dendermonde' the following baptismal record:
Michael van de Voorde, baptized in Opwijk, on 14 september 1614, as son of Paulus van de Voorde and Judoca van Schaerbeeck.

Remark 1: I didn't see the entree in the original record yet. So the spelling of his surname / last name could be standardized in order to make it easy to look up persons with all most the same name in this index.

Remark 2: There are no other baptisms of other children of this couple in this index, so it is possible Paulus van de Voorde and Judoca van Schaerbeeck lived somewhere else.

Remark 3: Judoca is the latin form for Josijntje, Josina.

Harry van der Voort"

.
He emigrated before 1640 from Dermonde, Flanders, Belgium.2,13,14

He received a patent for land on Manhattan Island in 1647 and owned various lots until around 1658, when he relocated his family to the Wallabout section of Brooklyn.

Michael owned a sloop, which he apparently rented out, until some time in 1654. On 31 May 1655, he received a license to sell alcohol "on the condition that he lodge strangers and others." He is last found in New Amsterdam (New York) in December 1659, when he sued Hendreck Pieterson for payment on a horse.

On 16 March 1661 "Michael Poules Vandefort" received 300 acres on Corsey's Creek in Talbot County, Maryland. By 1666 he had accumulated 550 acres, and in 1673 acquired another 450 acres in two other patents. These purchases are the first occasion when the name "Vanderford" is used in its modern form.

There are several court records concerning Michael from 1669-1673. In 1681, he sold 350 acres to Robert Smith, also of Talbot County. On 30 Nov 1690, "Michael Pawl Vanderwoerd" made his Will, which was proven on 20 Sep 1692.

Most Van Der Voort, Van Dervoort, Vandervoort, Vanderford, Vandervort names in Monroe County and Wisconsin are all descendants of Michael Pauluzen (Paulessen) Van der Voort, who emigrated from the city of Dermonde, Flanders, Belgium prior to the year 1640 to New Amsterdam, now New York.

The fifth marriage recorded in that city is that of Michael Van Der Voort and Merritie de Rapaljes, 18 Nov 1640. To this union, nine children were born. The people of Wisconsin are probably descended from their fourth child and second son, Paulus Michaelse, born 3 Jan 1649 at Bedford, Long Island.

. After 1640 he was in New Amsterdam, New York County, New Netherland (New York) Colony, British Colonial America.6 Surgeon, taphouse owner, innkeeper, shipping and tobacco. Michael was christened on 3 January 1649 in New Amsterdam, New York County, New Netherland (New York) Colony, British Colonial America.1 in the Dutch Reformed Church. He died on 20 September 1692 at the age of 76 in Easton, Talbot County, Maryland Colony, British Colonial America.10,11 He was buried in September 1692 in Talbot County, Maryland Colony, British Colonial America.1 Michael has Ancestral File Number 13LR-F9C.1 He has Ancestral File Number LV14-G79.1

Their marriage was the fifth to be recorded in New Amsterdam.)

On 16 December 1658 he sold a house and a lot on the north side of Hooge (High) Street, later known as Stone Street, near what is now Hanover Square, to Tielman Van Vleck.

. Marritje Joris "Maria" RAPALJE, daughter of Joris Janssen RAPALJE and Catalyntje Jeronimus TRICO, was born on 11 March 1627 in New Amsterdam, New York County, New Netherland (New York) Colony, British Colonial America.2,9 (Her full name was "Maria Rappalje, j.d.
