Charles Floyd VANDERVORT II and Marjory Elaine MURRAY were married on 16 June 1945.119,184,531

He wrote the following notes that accompany a picture of the family of his great-grandparents, James Baker and Anna (McIntyre) Vandervort in 1982:

"Top left - Sara married Brown, lived RR Tomah, Wisconsin. There were two daughters - Pansy later Portland, Oregon and Dora.

Otis m Nettie, lived Northolm, Minn. - children were Chester, Cecil, James, Hazel, Harry, Cyril, Darwin, Violet, Fern, Laures and Irvin.

Ernest D. {youngest child) m Maude of Tomah. No children. Lived Thief River Falls, Minn, and Superior, Wisc. Ernest was an Engineer, Soo Line RR. He took the last train out of town during the Hinkley fire, saved many lives. Ernest told me the fire was so intense it burned the wood steps off the engine. Other than my Grandfather Charlie, I knew Ernest the best as I used to visit him on occasions when I was in the Duluth area on business. After Ernest died, Maude gave me some momentos from James. These included his Civil War uniform blue hat (rather small), his sword, watch and metals.

Top right - Charles Lorenzo (my grandfather) and a very likeable fellow from my viewpoint. He married Mary McCauley of Tomah/Marshfield. There were three children - Bessy, Charles "Floyd," my father, and Catherine. Mary died just after childbirth of Catherine. I have been told by Maude or Ernest that cause of death was Typhoid. They said Bessie brought water from a contaminated well and Mary got the typhoid. Bessie had been told not to use that well. She was 13 years old and didn't take the effort to go the longer route and this happened. I also believe from what I was told that Mary needed a historectomy, but such was not known at that time. Charlie was a Soo Line RR Master Mechanic. He worked in various RR shops from Escanaba, Mich to Enderlin, ND. He ended up at the Shorum Shops in NE Minneapolis. There he had 400 men working under him. He had a stroke at age 52 and retired. Charlie had lost his left eye in a shop accident early in his life - a small piece of steel flew thru the air and got him. After Mary's death, two sisters, cousins Mary and Ida Sherman, came to visit and help care for the new baby with no mother. Charlie married Ida. From what I saw as I grew up, it was my opinion Charlie picked the wrong one; I knew both of them.

Bottom row left. James B. born Schoharie County N.Y., 3-30-1841. The family moved to Buffalo 1845 and then on to Oconomowac, Wisc. James enlisted Co. A 16th Wisc. Volunteers during the Civil War. He was involved in a lot of War engagement service. He was at the battle of Vicksburg, Miss. and other battles throughout the South. He was part of Sherman's "drive to the sea" which included the sac of Atlanta. James was the only man in the company to have a watch. According to Ernest this watch changed many times for whomever was on guard duty. James was discharged at the Fort Prarie du Chein, Wisc. He married Anna M. Mcintyre of Tomah. They farmed LaGrange, Wisc for 25 years, then moved to Tomah. They are buried at Oak Lawn Cemetery [should be Oak Grove] in Tomah. James had one brother, Cornelius, of Tomah and two sisters, Mrs. Maria Kinne of Tomah and Mrs. John Johnson of Washington State.

Anna McIntyre (of Tomah) Vandervort was according to Ernest and Maude a lady with a good sense of humor, the type with the twinkle in the eye.

Bottom right - Dora m Daniel Root lived Grundy Center, Iowa. There were two children - John and Daniel. John died as a young man of pneumonia (I believe the problem was a toxic colon). Daniel lived in Cedar Rapids."
