The following few years he worked at the McKenna Mill, a large sawmill 20 miles north of Tomah. He invented a logging sleigh which was recognized as the best in that part of the country. It became known as the Vandervort Sleigh. In 1897 he sold his city home and purchased a 93-acre farm on which he had another new home built.
