Obituary Notes: "One of the most tragic accidents in this city for many years occurred last Saturday morning, Aug. 25, in which Jacob Vandervort was instantly killed when struck by the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul train No. 15, a limited train which passes through this city without stopping. Mr. Vandervort has been driving a taxi line here for the past five years and left his home at 5:25 a.m. to make a trip north of Tomah. The mail train was an hour late and somehow Mr. Vandervort was not aware of the approaching train and his car was struck just as it got to the crossroad at Superior Avenue. Details of the terrible accident were lacking, but it is apparent that death was instantaneous. Jacob Vandervort was born on Oct. 19, 1862, at Oconomowoc, Wis., and later moved with his parents to the vicinity of Tomah. On Dec. 13, 1883, he was united in marriage to Harriet Forrest of LaGrange and since that time they have made their home in and near Tomah. In 1918 Mr. Vandervort and family came back to their home in Tomah, where they have been off and on for 16 years, and Mr. Vandervort entered the taxi business which he continued until his death. Jacob Vandervort leaves to mourn his loss his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Reuben Roder of Tomah, Mrs. Howard Hillard of Briggsville, Wis.; two brothers, William of Santa Cruz, California, and Louis of Tomah. Charles Forrest, brother of Mrs. Vandervort, came with his wife and daughter Elizabeth from Grand Rapids, Minnesota, to be with her during her sorrow. Mrs. Ida Forrest of Milwaukee, a cousin of Mrs. Vandervort, and Mrs. Will Heinze of Portage, a niece of Mr. Vandervort, were here for the funeral. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon from the home at one-thirty o'clock and at two o'clock from the K. P. Hall, the lodge having charge of the service. Rev. G. H. Willett of the M. E. Church of Tomah and Rev. Neil of Ontario, Canada, had charge of the services. Rev. Neil is an old friend of the Vandervort family and had charge of the LaGrange circuit during their residence in that district.
