From the notes of Charles F. Vandervort, 28 Aug 1982: "He married Mary McCauley of Tomah/Marshfield. There were three children - Bessy, Charles "Floyd", my father and Catherine. Mary died just after childbirth of Catherine. I have been told by Maude or Ernest that cause of death was Typhoid. They said Bessie brought water from a contaminated well and Mary got the typhoid. Bessie had been told not to use that well. She was 13 years old and didn't take the effort to go the longer route and this happened. I also believe from what I was told that Mary needed a historectomy but such was not known at that time."
