First Generation

1. Wilhelm David "William" VON HADEN I was born in 1816 in Saarn, Nordrhein-Westfalen Province, Preussen (Prussia).1,2,3 Monroe County Heritage Book Article: "For generations it has been handed down that William David Von Haden I, born about 1816, left Germany in a nailed cracker barrel because the King of Prussia came into Germany March 28, 1849 and was elected Emperor of Germany. In order to have a "Von" in front of your name, you had to be worth at least $250,000 and have the title of at least an "Earl."

It has been proven that some of the Von Hadens and Gamerdinger families were "Barons." owning thousands of head of cattle and thousands of acres of land, which were confiscated. At that time all the people that had "Von" in front of their names were put in jail, the mines, the army, or persecuted. This I (Marion Von Haden) found to be true when I was in Germany in 1958.

William's wife, Anna Maria, was born "Hurmierer," married Koeling and had a son, Frank, fathered by him. It has been handed down that she sold Frank for one hundred dollars, the amount of passage to America for herself and son Henry.

William was so afraid of being sent back to Germany that he took the name of "Van Hadden" while he working as a stone mason (census, June 15, 1860, Racine County #346, Waterford Township). The 1870 and 1880 census' show that he used the name "Forhandler," as did Henry III and others including my husband, George, while attending school 1906-1910. George's great-grandfather was William David I, who made out his will March 28, 1873 and was killed two days later when his team ran away in Clifton."

. He died on 30 March 1873 at the age of 57 in Clifton Township, Monroe County, WI.4 He was buried in Clifton Township, Monroe County, WI.4 in the Clifton Township Cemetery.
